Louise Archer Elementary School was awarded the “Excellence in Construction” award in the Educational - Public & Private Schools category by ABC of Metro Washington. The annual Metropolitan Washington Excellence in Construction awards program honors the outstanding quality construction produced by members of Associated Builders and Contractors’ Metro Washington and Virginia chapters. The 104,000 SF renovation and expansion of Louise Archer Elementary School doubled the building’s size, adding classrooms, a library, cafeteria, and upgraded core spaces, all while maintaining operations on a challenging sloped site. A key innovation was the careful discovery, restoration, and integration of the original three-room, wood-framed 1939 schoolhouse into the new steel-framed lobby, celebrating the school’s history as a living feature and teaching tool. The design sensitively balanced programmatic needs, site constraints, and historic preservation, creating a facility that meets current Fairfax County Public Schools standards and serves as a lasting tribute to the Vienna community.
