During the renovations/additions at Louise Archer Elementary School in Vienna, VA, for Fairfax County Public Schools a remarkable piece of history was revealed: a wooden wall from the original school, hidden behind brick for more than 70 years. Architecture, Inc. worked diligently with the project team to preserve and integrate this historical feature into the design, ensuring the school's historical significance was honored and connected to the community. Built during the Great Depression, the wall offers a powerful glimpse into the past.
Alees Coates-Richardson and Gloria Carter, former students who attended the school in the 1940s, returned to reconnect with this preserved remnant of their youth — a place where they once learned, worshipped, and played. Join them on an emotional journey as they revisit their childhood schoolhouse, honor the legacy of their principal Louise Archer, and reflect on the enduring strength and grace of Black students and educators during the era of segregation.
