Studio Residential

The sense of community has always reinforced the success of the neighborhood. Safety, laughter, sharing, discourse, breaking bread, …all are pleasures enhanced by the interaction of people in a comfortable, familiar environment.

Creating environments which encourage the human spirit to grow and flourish is our mission. We understand the needs of seniors to maintain a sense of worth, a sense of value and the ability to contribute. A complex mix of emotions, which links the past to the present and the present to the future, must be acknowledged.

The environments we design integrate the qualities experienced in the lives of seniors, allowing residents to settle in and feel comfortable. We understand the effects of aging and the flexibility the residence must afford over time.

A home is more than bricks and walls. It is the essence of the individual interacting with people and friends enjoying life in a safe familiar environment. We understand how to design such a place allowing these qualities to emerge.

Summerville at Litchfield Hills
Litchfield Hills, CT

It was the objective of the design team to create a community for a variety of elderly individuals. Since an adult day care center was provided along with resident apartment units, the range in age and abilities of the individuals would be varied. The site was steep and challenging. The facility needed to be linear to accomplish the desired program and work with the topography. A covered Porte Cochere reaches out to shelter residents and visitors as they arrive. A large porch wraps around the front facade providing a sheltered area with wicker seats and gliders allowing residents to sit and watch the activity. A large second floor deck was placed on the rear of the building overlooking the heavily wooded wetlands. The interior utilized the Colonial New England design to enhance the facility with formal stairways, two–story lobby, large interior columns, crown moldings and chair rail. Some of the services and public spaces include the beauty parlor/barber shop, lounge, arts and crafts department and a wellness center.

Summerville at Prince William
Prince Willaim, VA

It was our objective to create a safe, familiar environment providing a variety of options fostering interaction, privacy, activity and relaxation. These objectives would be provided in a comfortable, traditional Georgian home with authentic Williamsburg detailing.

Rich interior furnishings, raised panel wainscot and chair rail, crown moldings, wall sconces, cherry wood balusters and handrails, all would be used to recreate a nostalgic step back to a simpler, more relaxed era. The selection of off-white English bone china, the wall tapestry, elegant glassware, interior Doric columns and hardwood flooring, the front porch wicker chairs and gliders, the see-through fireplace with traditional surround and mantels, all were integral in creating this American Colonial design.

Within the building, individual neighborhoods were organized to give residents a sense of community and to reduce walking distances to public spaces.

Summerville at Westminster
Westminster, MD

It was the design objective of this unique facility to preserve the character and scale of the existing 1905 residence on this small site in a rural town while developing a new facility providing quality in a uniquely vernacular environment.

The residential neighborhood had regional significance and was a historical part of the community fabric. Our objective was achieved in the design of this 54–room addition by utilizing the existing home for dining and social rooms in keeping with the scale of a bed and breakfast. The new lodging wing was placed behind the existing home to emphasize the importance of the original home and to draw arriving visitors to this facility entrance.

Harborside Condominiums at Belmont Bay
Woodbridge, Virginia

The new residential community of Belmont Bay created an environment of serenity and luxury. Located along the Occoquan River single and multifamily homes featured views of the waterfront and golf course. Urban planning principles enlivened the development and reinforced the idea of community.

In the development of the Harborside project it was our objective to create a building that reinforced the community environment. The federal style building promoted a sense of elegance and luxury while establishing a street presence. Through the use of detail and materials the human scale was maintained. The 28–unit building also had garage parking. Inside the building the common areas featured rich materials used in a contemporary manner to create a resort feeling. Color lent an airy and carefree atmosphere to the interior space. Recesses at the resident unit entries established a “front porch” for each unit that lent individuality to the units. The units themselves included spacious bedrooms, eat–in kitchens, and airy balconies. Tall windows brought in profuse amounts of natural light.
